Water is the source of life, growth, health, and community resilience. With this in mind, Friends of Madagascar Mission (FOMM) asks your help in promoting and becoming involved in the FOMM Water Wells Project.
- NEW WELLS (Deep water wells)
We aim to dig 100 wells in southwest Madagascar, a region that often experiences severe drought. Major rivers often dry up -- creating a humanitarian crisis in village after village if clean drinking water is not provided. FOMM has conducted research in the field over the past 12 months and deployed a professional hydrological investigative team to the region to prioritize areas for the location of wells with assistance provided by the local communities as to location of wells. FOMM also has local partners with advanced exploratory technology and drilling rigs who have made preparations for developing wells and identified specific villages for the project to begin.
- To raise the funds required to dig 100 wells, we need your help in identifying grants that are for digging water wells.
- Perhaps your congregation has an endowment fund or other means to support this project.
- However, grants take time to process, and time is one thing in short supply for people without water, so we are asking you as an individual to make a donation of any size at this time. (estimated cost per deep well is $20,000)
- EXISTING WATER WELLS (Needing repairs)
The locals say there are hundreds of water wells dug by organizations but then abandoned them and have not returned to maintain them. As a result, the pumps break, parts are stolen and is some cases the wells are filled with rocks and a community is left without any water.A second emphasis for FOMM’s Wells Water Project is to repair these wells. We have identified a very good nonprofit called Madagascar Water Project (MWP) and are collaborating with them to develop a program to repair these wells and establish a regular schedule to return and check that the wells are in working order. They are using Indian Mark III hand pumps which are quality pumps and also will take measures to make them theft resistant. The cost to repair a well costs between $1,000.00 and $1,200.00. These wells are life savers and each well will benefit more than 1,000 people. They have identified 1,000 such wells. This is a very cost effective project. One-hundred percent of a gift for this project will go to repairing wells.
Friends of Madagascar Mission (FOMM) is a volunteer mission organization with no paid employees and a guarantee of sending “100 cents on the dollar” for all gifts to its projects.
